Cuban Revolution celebrated

BY JIM McILROY

BRISBANE — Beautiful slides of Cuba were a highlight of a solidarity night held at the Resistance Centre on March 31. The slides were taken by Tim Stewart during his January-February visit to Cuba on the "In the Footsteps of Che" tour. Stewart photographed a number of the key sites where Che Guevara conducted battles against Cuban dictator Batista in the late 1950s, as well as contemporary scenes of socialist Cuba.

Oscar Orellana, co-ordinator of the Australia-Cuba Friendship Society's 2001 work brigade that visited Cuba earlier this year, spoke about the experiences and inspiration that the Australian brigadistas gained from the Cuban people and their struggle. Susan Austin launched the new publication by Resistance Books, Cuba as Alternative.

The night was presented by Green Left Weekly and supported by the Committee in Solidarity with Latin America and the Caribbean.
