Cuba: New UN rejection of blockade

Issue

The United Nations general assembly ratified on October 26, for the 29th consecutive time, the global rejection of the blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba for almost 50 years, Prensa Latina said that day.

The isolation of the US government over Cuba was shown by the vote on the resolution entitled “The necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”.

There were 187 votes in favor of the resolution and only two against (the US and Israel). There were three abstentions (Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau).

Prensa Latina noted Cuba’s demand to lift Washington’s coercive measure was supported by all the UN member states from Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa and Europe.

The resolution reaffirmed the principles of sovereign equality among states, non-intervention and non-interference in internal affairs, and freedom of international trade and navigation.

The resolution asked the UN secretary general to prepare a report on compliance with the resolution to be presented to the 66th session of the general assembly next year, when the issue of the blockade will once again be debated.
