The Latin American Research Group Australia (www.latitudesgroup.info) has organised a half-day event on disrupting neoliberal discourse and practices from converting most of Australian academics and staff into ‘casuals’; students into customers; unreflective education into ‘active’ or ‘distance’ learning; degrees into paid licenses for future (un)employment; and surveillance over staff and competition among them into ‘performance’, amid many other commodified and autocratic paths taken by public universities today in Australia.
It will feature presentations by academics, students and activists, including interviews with protagonists of the 2011 Chilean Winter student movement, who managed to mobilise an entire country and radically change the national discourse on the invasion of the market into higher education and most public areas.
The conference is open to the public with prior registration (latitudesgroup@gmail.com). The conference will end with a gathering hosted by the Latin America Social Forum Sydney from 5pm. Website & program
