CFMEU green ban in Pyrmont

Issue

On July 13, the Construction Forestry Mining Energy Union placed a green ban on the NSW government's proposed site for the Pyrmont-CBD Metro station. The union has refused to demolish four 130-year-old Victorian terraces in Union Square.

The building of the Sydney Metro is to be welcomed as a necessary extension of public transport to cut carbon emissions in the face of catastrophic global warming, but the union says this can be done without destroying the architectural heritage of Sydney.

There are other options for a site for the Metro station, including a vacant block in nearby Harris Street and the Star City Casino.
