CFMEU bans demolition

By Chantal Wynter

MELBOURNE — The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) has backed a campaign by Broadmeadows teachers and community leaders to stop the government from bulldozing the caretakers' residence at Broadmeadows Secondary College.

Martin Kingham of the CFMEU said, "Broadmeadows Secondary College has for many years enjoyed the services of an excellent caretaker, cleaner and grounds keeper. When the Department of Secondary Education got rid of cleaners the School Council, made up of community and teacher representatives, voted to employ him and keep him on."

Without any consultation, the Kennett government ignored this decision and announced the demolition of the building. The CFMEU has responded by placing a ban on the demolition to try to get the government to talk to the community.
