About 120 people attended the Green Left Weekly 1000th issue celebration at the Annandale Neighbourhood Centre on March 15.

Greetings to the milestone event were given by NSW Fire Brigade Employees Union vice president Jim Casey, Greens Sydney City councillor Irene Doutney, and Latin American Social Forum member Paula Sanchez.

The speakers congratulated GLW on its achievement of 1000 issues, and noted the paper's special role in providing vital information on union, environmental and international campaigns.

Chairperson Margaret Allan introduced the proceedings, with a guest appearance from GLW satirist Carlo Sands. Rapper Ben Iota and the Latin American band Bello Sur also performed.

Ninety people toasted 1000 issues of GLW in Melbourne on the same night. Greetings were heard from 3CR presenter and Aboriginal rights activist Robbie Thorpe, progressive lawyer Rob Stary, Climate Action Moreland member Sally-Rose Carbines, Geelong Trades Hall Council secretary Tim Gooden, Federation of Tamil Associations member Siva Sivakumar, and Socialist Alliance Moreland councillor Sue Bolton.

Visiting Nepalese socialist Gopal Prasad Thapaliya, a leader of the Nepal Communist Party (United Marxist-Leninist) and editor of the Chhalphal National Weekly, praised international collaboration between left media.

Iranian refugee Ali Bakhtiavandi also spoke and was loudly cheered for his regular photo-journalist work for GLW. Denis Rogatyuk, recently returned from a solidarity brigade to Venezuela, praised GLW's coverage of the Venezuelan revolution and commemorated the anniversary of late president Hugo Chavez's death. Les Thomas sang songs of struggle and Divina Providencia provided Latin-reggae grooves.

Perth also marked the occasion by hosting a dinner for 65 people. Speakers included founding supporter of GLW Janet Parker, media researcher Thor Kerr and Socialist Alliance Senate candidate Alex Bainbridge.

The night was concluded with a beautiful performance by Waveney Yasso.

Dinners, toasts and fundraisers took place around the country.
