BRISBANE — Brisbane's Committee in Solidarity with Latin America and the Caribbean (CISLAC) will celebrate 20 years of solidarity with the Latin American people's struggle for justice on Saturday, July 24, with a big Latin Dance Fiesta.
The Cai-Cai-Vilu Latin dance group, which has performed at the Maleny and Woodford Folk Festivals, the Queensland Performing Arts Complex and Brisbane City Hall, will perform a variety of Chilean dance from different parts of the country, as well as other Latin dance forms.
Brisbane's best Latin DJ, Sonido Tropicale, will keep the crowd going into the night and great prizes are to be won, including a dinner for two donated by El Toritos restaurant.
The funds raised will go to a CISLAC project in El Salvador to provide clean drinking water to 352 homes in Azacuapla, a municipality in Chalatenango. Azacuapla obtains water throughout the year from springs in the nearby hills. The water is piped into the township but there are no storage facilities so unused water flows onto the ground and into the creek.
The project is to construct a large tank at the collection point from which water can be pumped to several smaller tanks at high points around the town. These small tanks will then provide gravity forced water to the 1540 residents' homes, resulting in improved health for the people.
CISLAC has supported numerous aid projects in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Cuba and Honduras, and all CISLAC activists are volunteers to ensure that virtually all the funds raised reach Latin America.
