Tuesday October 21 @ 6pm
Stirling Gardens, Perth
A candlelight vigil will be held at Stirling Gardens for the death of Mayang Prasetyo. People can bring their own candles, but there will be candles supplied on the night as well.
Mayang Prasetyo was living with her long term partner in Tenerife, Brisbane, when he murdered her and brutalised her body. This kind of spousal violence is all too common, and has deprived a kind, vibrant young woman of her life.
In addition, Mayang was a member of both the sex worker and transgender communities, in addition to being a person of colour. These three marginalised identities face astronomical rates of abuse and violence - they are less likely to be able to leave abusive relationships, more likely to face murder and violence for simply living their lives, and less likely to be accorded basic respect in their day to day life.
Sex workers are often unable to seek justice for violence against them due to unreasonable laws and police bias. In addition sex workers rarely find justice in death, with their murderers often pardoned because of their victims' profession.
Trans women and especially trans women of colour are murdered in droves every year, in many different countries around the world, and Australia is no different. This violence and disrespect is not uncommon, both from the general public and the media that then sensationalises these deaths, if they're reported at all.
Please be respectful of Mayang and other attendees. Everyone is welcome to stay for as long or short a time as they wish.
