Brisbane action updates

By Maurice Sibelle

While the war against Iraq is over, people in the Gulf Action Coalition see no reason to stop meeting. Activists feel that the US victory did little to solve the outstanding issues in the region, particularly the Palestinian and Kurdish questions. At its meeting on April 22, GAC decided to hold a seminar on June 1 to look at this issue. GAC will meet again on May 13.

Chile Solidarity at its April 24 meeting discussed the future of the committee. It is currently surveying the membership and exploring links with other Latin American communities. The next meeting will be on May 15.

Latin American groups are planning a conference for some time in August. A meeting was convened by the Committee in Solidarity with Latin America and the Caribbean on April 26.

Children by Choice picketed parliament house on April 22, one of six weekly pickets organised to pressure the Goss Labor government on abortion law reform. The picket was changed to the Monday night to avoid clashes with Right to Life counter-protests. The final picket will be on April 29. The newly formed Women's Abortion Campaign will meet that night to prepare a more concerted campaign.
