Movie: Life on Earth (1998) — Abderrahmane Sissako's stunning and poetic film in which the French-based Mauritian director goes back to a small village in Mali to see his father as the millennium approaches. Australia by Numbers: Croker Island 0822 — This is the story of Harold Furber, who was removed from his family in Alice Springs at the age of four with his three-year-old sister to live on a Methodist mission on Croker Island, over 1600 kilometres away. The program focuses on their life on the mission and Harold's subsequent release eight years later — told through the hundreds of slides and home movies taken on the island. SBS, Tuesday, November 7, 7.30pm.

Choice 2000: George W Bush — Traces the history of Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush. SBS, Tuesday, November 7, 8.30pm.

Movie: Aprile (1998) — Nanni Moretti's idiosyncratic dissection of self, society and state in April, a month marked by two momentous occasions: the birth of his son and the election of Italy's first left-wing government. Diehard communist Moretti, morally committed to making a documentary about the upcoming elections, is obliged to abandon a long-planned project to make a 1950s musical about a Trotskyist pastry chef, a project he only manages to get off the ground at the end of the movie. SBS, Wednesday, November 8, 10pm.

Movie: The Sent-Down Girl (1998) — A powerful depiction of the fate of a young woman in China towards the end of the Cultural Revolution. In 1969, 16-year-old Xiu Xiu is "sent down" to the countryside. Director Joan Chen's debut feature. From the US. SBS, Wednesday, November 8, 11.55pm.
