BOTSWANA: Bushmen oppose BHP-Billiton

Issue 

The First People of the Kalahari, a Botswanan Bushmen organisation, has lodged a complaint with the World Bank about a BHP-Billiton venture in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, which is funded by the World Bank's private arm. BHP-Billiton has attempted to fulfill its formal need to consult with the Bushmen, the indigenous people of the area, by sticking up signs which explain it plans to survey for diamonds — in English and Setswana, neither or which most Bushmen speak.
