Blockade planned against cable-car

By Tony Hastings

KURANDA — Preparation is being made for a campaign of direct action to prevent the construction of a sky-rail cable-way in World Heritage-listed national parks land just north of Cairns.

People Against Kuranda Sky-Rail (PAKS) maintain that the project can be stopped despite it being granted approval by the Goss and Keating governments. "Environmental legislation states that any work in the area must be for its protection, conservation and presentation", say PAKS.

A recent public meeting overwhelmingly opposed the private development, which, it is claimed, will interfere with claimable Aboriginal sacred sites and with Wet Tropics Authority-identified, but as yet unlisted and unstudied, flora and fauna in the area.
