Benefit gig for Indonesian prisoners

BRISBANE — The fall of Suharto and his replacement by B.J. Habibie, while not representing fundamental democratic change in Indonesia, have led to the release of a small number of political prisoners.

Despite this, more than 200 other political prisoners still languish in jail, including Dita Sari, Xanana Gusmao and Budiman Sujatmiko. They are the most radical, and therefore the most dangerous, to the regime.

To continue the campaign for their release and the struggle for democracy, activists in Indonesia desperately need funds for equipment, paper and printing.

A benefit gig has been organised featuring bands like Polish, Battered Fish, Relish, Radio Atlas and What Was in the Envelope. They have donated their time to provide a night of fun, politics and music.

The gig will be held on Friday, June 26, 7pm, at Che's Lounge in Bonapartes Hotel, St Pauls Tce, the Valley, on Friday, June 26.
