The Attorney-General Nicola Roxon will be speaking at a conference in Sydney on Friday April 20 on the subject of “Rule of Law and the Commonwealth Principles – Terrorism, Emergency Laws and Human Rights”.

This comes a few days after an appearance on the ABC’s Q&A program during which she attempted to defend the Australian government’s shameful treatment of Julian Assange. Christine Assange has since pointed out at least 18 lies in Roxon’s responses.

Roxon persisted with her government’s denial that they know anything about US plans to extradite Assange despite evidence that a sealed grand jury indictment already exists. She also repeated the lie that Assange “fled” Sweden when he in fact stayed there for 5 weeks for the purpose of answering the allegations against him and was then given permission to leave.

In another extraordinary development, human rights lawyer, Jennifer Robinson, was stopped today in Britain before being allowed to travel back Sydney to speak at the same conference as Roxon. DFAT have denied any knowledge of the incident but Robinson, who has previously represented Julian Assange, says she was told by security at Heathrow that she was on an “inhibited travel list” and permission needed to be sought from DFAT at the Australian High Commission in London for her to be allowed to travel.

The Support Assange and WikiLeaks Coalition (SAWC) has announced its intention to picket the Attorney-General’s public appearances to demand she tell the truth about Julian Assange – he has committed no crime against Australian law – and defend his judicial rights.

SAWC will be at the tomorrow Friday 20 April at the Sydney Convention Centre from 12.15pm. Join us with your placards to let our Attorney-General know that the Australian people won’t stand for these attacks on Julian Assange and on our democracy.
