Art will not wank

ADELAIDE — On November 14, artists and activists will come together in a unique exploration of art as an agent for social change. This exhibition and performance night, titled Art for Social Change, will feature 14 visual artists, poets, well-known Adelaide musicians and performance acts.
Maureen Sexton, an organiser of the event, told Green Left, "For one night only, art will not dither around the edges, art will not sit on the fence, art will not wank. Art will make a statement for land rights, for women's liberation, workers' rights, gay and lesbian rights; art will stand against the Jabiluka mine and in solidarity with the activists in Indonesia and East Timor."
Among others, Vaughan Green, a solidarity activist, will exhibit finished works and documentary information related to political events. Video documentation of Green's installations and political environments will also be shown.
Davie O'Donell will exhibit oil paintings exploring indigenous issues.
A feature of the evening will be a preview of the poster, designed by Jennifer Newton, which will launch the new save Kumarangk (Hindmarsh Island) campaign. Newton will also exhibit other works.
Tristan Miller, Ben Budgen, Ben Philpott and Joe Hattam, high school members and supporters of Resistance, will exhibit their works focusing on racism and the GST.
Wendy Joseph will perform and the audience will be treated to the satirical and passionate poetry of John McGill, Juan Garrido, Connie Frazer and Maureen Sexton.
Other artists include Nina Lagzdins, Emma Webb, Jo Ellis, Natalie Woodlock and Jodie Combeer.
Art for Social Change will take place on Saturday, November 14, from 7.30 pm at the Box Factory, 59 Regent Street South, Adelaide. Cost is $7/$4 concession. Cocktails, coffee and cake will be available. To contribute, or for more information, ring (08) 8231 6982.
