Are you worried about PM Tony Abbott? Help build an alternative

The infamous front page of Rupert Murdoch's Daily Telegraph on August 5, screaming “KICK THIS MOB OUT” in reference to Kevin Rudd's Labor government, reminded many of the role the media play in politics.

Most of the corporate media, including Murdoch's empire, actively advocates for the interests of the wealthy, which all too often means manipulating truths, scapegoating victims and generating division. It's up to us to create and build independent media outlets that advocate for ordinary people and communities. This means investigative journalism that dares to tell the truth and exposes corruption in power.

This will be even more difficult and more necessary under a Tony Abbott government.

For example, under Abbott, the man who once called climate change “absolute crap”, there is no minister for science. The last time this was so was 1931. Abbott has also withdrawn the media relations of all his ministers, and any comment to the media has to be approved by his office first. That is, ministers cannot even act as spokespeople for their own portfolio without the PM's staffers’ say so.

More than ever we need independent media explaining the change happening to our climate and advocating for political action.

Green Left Weekly is one such independent media outlet that will stand up to the likes of Abbott and Murdoch. But it takes time, energy and money. Unsurprisingly, we don't receive donations or sponsorship from the big end of town. We rely purely on the generosity of our supporters and subscribers. So far this year, we've raised $122,880 for our annual Fighting Fund, a total we hope will reach $250,000 by the end of the year to stay afloat.

You can help Green Left Weekly keep fighting to get out the truth by making a donation online to our fighting fund. You can buy a GLW for a friend and help broaden our reach. Or you can update your GLW subscription to a special Solidarity Subscription.
Direct deposits can also be made to Greenleft, Commonwealth Bank, BSB 062-006, Account No. 00901992. Otherwise, you can send a cheque or money order to PO Box 515, Broadway NSW 2007 or donate on the toll-free line at 1800 634 206 (within Australia).

Together we can stop Abbott’s plans.
