Amir Amirani's documentary film We Are Many — on the huge outpouring of public opposition to the Iraq War in February 2003 — has its Australian premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival on Oct 22 and 24.
On Feb 15, 2003, 30 million people marched against the impending US-led war in Iraq. The protesters warned the Iraq invasion would be a disaster and humanitarian catastrophe — and were tragically proven right.
The film is the never-before-told story of the largest demonstration in human history and how the movement created by a small band of activists changed the world. This movement was described by the New York Times as the world's “second superpower”.
The Guardian said of the film: “It is such a gigantic scandal that we have, paradoxically, almost forgotten about it … but Amir Amirani makes a bold case for understanding the march in a larger context … a very valuable film.”
After the Adelaide festival, the film will be screened at Bemac in Brisbane on November 2; the Canberra International Film Festival on November 7; and Sydney Preview on November 9 at Dendy Newtown. All screenings will have a Q & A session joined by the filmmakers and cast members Vince Emanuele, Dave Burgess, Will Saunders, as well as organisers of the original demonstration.
