A meeting of more than 40 activists on March 3 agreed to form the "CHOGM Action Network''.

The meeting was called to plan protest actions during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which will take place in Perth in October.

Meeting participants decided to begin organising a peaceful mass rally on October 28. The protest will coincide with the opening day of the summit. The WA state government has declared the day a public holiday.

A wide range of local activist groups were represented at the meeting, including the Refugee Rights Action Network, the Deaths in Custody Watch Committee, Ban Uranium Mining Permanently, the WA Nuclear Free Alliance, Safe Climate Perth and the Friends of Palestine.

The Greens, several trade union activists and several socialist groups were also represented.

Other ideas raised at the meeting included setting up a tent city for interstate guests and organising a counter conference to CHOGM. But no decisions about these proposals have been made at this stage.

The next meeting of the Network will take place on March 17 at the Perth Activist Centre,15/5 Aberdeen St, East Perth.
