Actions against uranium mining

Issue

SYDNEY — As a part of the Democratic Socialism '96 conference, Resistance has initiated a pre-conference action around the demand "No uranium mining! No mines in Kakadu! No uranium sales to Indonesia!". The action, to be held outside the offices of Energy Resources Australia (ERA) in the city at 4.30pm on April 4, will launch a Resistance campaign around the issue.

Another major action is planned for April 27 as part of a National Day of Action against uranium mining being organised by a range of left and environment groups. Resistance is seeking broad sponsorship and involvement for the NDA protest in Sydney.

Sydney Resistance organiser Wendy Robertson said, "With the Coalition's plans to open more uranium mines in Australia, beginning with Jabiluka in Kakadu, it is urgent that we demand an end to Australia's part in the whole nuclear cycle. "The Labor Party is saying no more mines, but we are saying there should be no mines at all", she said.
