ADELAIDE — On August 1, social work students demonstrated against the decision to relocate their course from the Adelaide campus to Magil. Fifty-four percent of social work students are financially disadvantaged, and moving the course to Magil would require many students to likewise move to a suburb where housing rental, for many, is too high. The university administration eventually agreed to allow students who have begun their studies at the Adelaide campus to complete them there.

  • The Campaign for an Independent East Timor held a picket outside the Garuda Airlines Office on August 5. The picket received encouragement from passers-by who collected leaflets and signed petitions calling for an end to Australian and Indonesian involvement in East Timor Oil Gap Treaty and an end to human rights violations in East Timor.

  • "A rally of 1000 people in favour of legalising cannabis took place at Parliament House on August 5. The rally was organised by Help End Marijuana Prohibition as part of a week of activities which also included film showings, a public meeting, a Paranormal Rave party, the Legalisation Across the Nation Conference and a general student meeting and smoke-in at Flinders University that attracted 400 people.

CANBERRA — On July 30, 150 people attended a pro-choice rally in Garema Place. The rally, organised by Resistance and the Democratic Socialist Party, was part of a campaign to decriminalise abortion. The Labor Party has a "conscience" vote on the issue, but Labor MLA, Wayne Berry is planning to introduce a private member's bill to decriminalise abortion. Speakers at the rally included: Alison Dellit from the Democratic Socialist Party; Tija Van Ray from the Michael Moore Independent Group; Caitlin Wyndham from the Australian National University Students' Association; and independent MLA Michael Moore.

SYDNEY — The annual general meeting of the Aboriginal Deaths in Custody Watch Committee held here on August 4 was attended by more than 40 activists and supporters. After seven years of struggling for justice, the meeting resolved to protest continued state and federal government inaction on deaths in custody. A rally has been planned for August 11 from 11am to 2pm outside Parliament House with a public meeting at 7pm at the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre.
