Action for Aboriginal rights

SYDNEY — A speakout and concert is being organised for August 16 to unite campaigns for Aboriginal rights in Australia.

The event is primarily being organised to protest the racist NT intervention into Aboriginal communities, and to fight against its extension into other communities. In particular, local Aboriginal people are concerned about Labor MP Peter Garrett's remark on May 26, "We should be introducing it [income management] here, in my electorate, in [the Sydney suburb of] La Perouse".

The event, to be held at Redfern Community Centre from 1pm, also aims to promote awareness of the continuing attempts by developers and the NSW government to take over the Redfern Block, one of the few Aboriginal-controlled housing projects in urban Australia.
