3CR radiothon this week

Melbourne's only citywide community radio station is having its annual Radiothon from July 6 to 19. "We need to raise $100,000 in the fortnight so that we can continue to bring our unique style of broadcasting to Melbourne", station manager Bruce Francis said.

The $100,000 is to help pay the running costs of the station — technical expenses, training volunteers, power, telephone and all the other costs involved in putting programs to air.

The theme of this year's radiothon is "3CR speaks your language". Each week more than 100 community organisation are heard on 3CR providing news, information, analysis and entertainment. Broadcasts on 3CR involve groups as diverse as trade unions, women, Kooris, ethnic organisations and arts and recreation groups.

Melbourne's first community broadcaster, 3CR has relied on the support of its listeners. "3CR has always provided something different", Francis said. "We have pioneered programs such as nostalgia music, gardening talkback and fishing shows. We are also well known for our community approach to current affairs."

For the last three months, the station has been sharing the services of the Melbourne component of Green Left's "Meetings ... Parties ... Anything" by running it as "Word of Mouth" every Tuesday morning and Wednesday afternoon. Listeners are urged to notify Green Left Weekly of upcoming events or to get more information about the events listed. This helps promote the station, GLW and the many activist and cultural events listed.

On 3CR you will hear news little heard elsewhere. "Our coverage of the Rio Earth Summit looked at the issues and sought the views of environmental activists while others just reported on the political leaders", he said. The station also provides interesting commentary: Kevin Healy's "The week that was", which appears regularly in Green Left, is taken from Kevin's feature on 3CR.

3CR is committed to providing a voice for Australian culture. "We are the only radio station in Australia committed to playing 55% Australian music. Donations support 3CR's commitment to Australian culture and training of its 500 volunteers and are tax deductible."

During the week 3CR (855 AM) will have some very special broadcasting. "We will have lots of special guests. Breakfast programs (6-9 a.m.) will look at issues ranging from the feminist backlash to a special series of opinions on economic rationalism at 8.30 a.m. Monday to Friday.

"If you value an independent, progressive community media I urge you to support 3CR's radiothon by phoning (03) 419 8377 and pledging your donation", Francis said.
