Brazil at a crossroad; the campaign for democracy

Brazilians current president Temer is enacting a militarisation of Brazil. Ten human rights activists have been murdered in the last five months, including prominent socialist, lesbian councilor Marielle Franco. 

Alongside this attack on democracy is a vicious privatization campaign aiming to transfer wealth from the poor to the rich. 

Brazilians are responding through mass protests, including hundreds of thousands rising up demanding justice for Marielle Franco. 

The new Gillard-led Labor government has cut a deal with the mining companies, ensuring billions keep flowing to the mega rich. This wealth could instead be used to fund a massive, necessary shift to renewable energy. Beyond Zero Emissions has just released a detailed, costed plan showing that a Australia could realistically become a carbon-free economy by 2020.
This forum will examine how we can campaign for a sustainable future where people and the planet come before the profit interests of mining corporations.

A delegation of Malaysians visiting Australia will attend the meeting to voice their concerns to Lynas about them building the worlds largest rare earths refinery in Kuantan on the east coast of Malaysia.The plant risks polluting important coastal ecosystems and major sources of livelihoods for local people. There are over 700,000 people living in a 35km radius of the Lynas plant who were never consulted about the refinery.
