BRISBANE — Terasita Carpio, a leader of the Philippines trade union movement, addressed several meetings and met union members during her recent tour here.
Carpio presented a public forum at the Resistance Centre on May 3 on the theme of Challenges Facing the Labour Movement in the Philippines.
She is currently director of the women's department of the United Workers of the Philippines and secretary of the Midas Workers Union in Metro Manila. The UWP was formed around a year ago as part of a process of regroupment in the Philippines left.
Carpio described her first-hand experiences in organising among garment workers at the Midas factory in Manila.
She also addressed a seminar sponsored by the Combined Public Sector Union on May 2, met with members of the Philippines migrant community and visited the Textile, Clothing and Footwear Union office.

By now we all know that the rich get richer under capitalism. But many are astounded at the incredible pace this takes place.
"Without Green Left Weekly, freedom of press and public truth-telling in Australia would be gravely ill."
