Day of action against uranium mines
Actions opposing the watering down of the Labor Party's "three mines" uranium policy will be held in a number of capital cities on Thursday, September 22. Uranium policy will be debated at the ALP National Conference in Hobart September 26-29. A strong push to allow the opening of new mines is expected despite the fact that the three mines policy was introduced as a "phase out " policy.
In Darwin a rally will be held at 12.30pm at Raintree Park. Speakers include Jamie Pittock (Environment Centre), Margaret Friel (environmental activist and Aboriginal lawyer), Trish Crossin (Teachers Federation and ALP left). Phone Ilana, Carol, or Peter on 818 003.
In Melbourne letters and postcards will be delivered to the ALP between 10am and noon. For details phone Dave Sweeny or Kathleen McCann on 419 8700.
In Sydney a yellowcake lunch will be held at 1pm outside the ALP headquarters, 377 Sussex St. Bring props including gas masks as well as yellow cakes to present to delegates. In Perth a rally will be held at noon at Forrest Place. Speakers include Harry Cohen (Medical Association for the Prevention of War) and former senator Jo Vallentine.
