Residents rally to save fig trees
By Susan Price
BRISBANE ... One hundred residents and supporters tied yellow ribbons around two historic Moreton Bay fig trees in a protest called by the Herston, Kelvin Grove Residents Group here on October 9.
The two 110-year-old trees, of heritage value and separating residential homes from busy Kelvin Grove Road, are earmarked for destruction under a state government and city council proposal to widen the road.
Moves to save the trees are supported by community and environmental groups, including People for New Ways not Freeways.
Ann Boccabella, president of the residents group, chaired the protest, and speakers from the Queensland Greens and the Democratic Socialist Party offered support for an ongoing campaign to save the trees and to challenge the irresponsible approach of the Department of Transport.

By now we all know that the rich get richer under capitalism. But many are astounded at the incredible pace this takes place.
"Without Green Left Weekly, freedom of press and public truth-telling in Australia would be gravely ill."
