Survival '94
More than 10,000 Kooris and their supporters gathered at Survival '94 in Sydney on Invasion Day, Jan 26th, to celebrate Aboriginal culture and struggle. The day-long event brought performers and participants from all over Australia.
The range of acts included both traditional and contemporary performers, on two stages, with a wide appeal for all who attended. Some of those in the line-up included Mixed Relations, Tiddas, Black Justice, Bangarra Dance Theatre, Coloured Stone, Brenda Webb and Alice Haines.
Organised by the Aboriginal Arts Management Association, Survival '94 is building on the important role played by the Koori community of La Perouse in 1988 when Aboriginal people from all over Australia converged on La Perouse for the biggest such gathering in Australia's history. "Without Green Left Weekly, freedom of press and public truth-telling in Australia would be gravely ill."
