International Women's Day art exhibition

Ten women artists, eight of them from the Northern Territory, were represented in this exhibition, which ran for two weeks from International Women's Day.

Well-known NT artists such as Heather Riley, Eileen O'Connor and Rivella had several pieces exhibited, and local Aboriginal artists Kathleen Arbon, Joanne Nasir, Esther Nabaltjarri and Wendy Napangardi Lechleitner also showed some of their work. Yvonne Sorensen, a recent graduate from the NTU fine arts course, showing a piece titled Undermined (pictured) a triptych commenting on the impact of European settlement on the wilderness area of Kakadu.

While the exhibition had no specific theme, many of the pieces showed a strong concern for the environment and the presentation of some of the truly beautiful places in the NT.

Robyn Lesley, who runs the White Egret Gallery, told the opening night crowd on March 8 that she hoped the exhibition would become an annual event. "This is my contribution to International Women's Day", Lesley said. "This exhibition shows the diversity and talent which exist in the Territory."
