Controversial film to be screened

SYDNEY — Resistance, a $6 million Australian epic film production, will screen at the AFI Cinema, Paddington Town Hall, on April 30.

This technically superb, wide-screen action thriller tells the story of two women's survival in the tragedy of civil war. The heroism of everyday people and the shocking brutality of armed forces out of control are exposed through a rich tapestry of characters.

Resistance, which will have its world premiere release on October 14 in New York City, is being screened as a fundraiser for Re-Working Australia, a broad-based group opposed to the New Right economic rationalism of the major parties.

Resistance deals with contemporary political issues, but it is not a highbrow, intellectual movie. It's described as an accessible, entertaining, emotionally gut-wrenching experience; bright and colourful, with sun-drenched exteriors and golden landscapes. It is a controversial film that advocates armed resistance to oppression, and is likely to polarise public opinion. Tickets are $10 and $5 concession.
