Audit criticisms suppressed

ADELAIDE — The views of a group of academics critical of the state government's audit commission have been suppressed by Adelaide's daily paper, the Advertiser.

The Independent Audit Commission Review Group, composed of academics from Adelaide University and the University of SA, has called on the Brown government for full and immediate public disclosure of all audit commission documents.

A meeting organised by the Anglican Church and social justice groups to discuss the white paper was told by Ray Broomhill from Adelaide University that an article written by Advertiser journalist Mike McEwen, which detailed the findings of the academics, had been agreed to be printed after vigorous discussion in an editorial board meeting of the paper. However the article was vetoed by the editor, much to the displeasure of some of the Advertiser staff.

The Advertiser has printed many articles supporting the slash and burn policies advocated by the commission.
