Filipinos fight Australian power plant

An Australian company, Arch Print Pty Ltd, is about to start building a power plant only 150 metres from houses in the village of Tanza on Manila Bay.

The plant will be diesel for at least the first three years. Pollution from this fuel would be very damaging to agricultural and marine resources and to people's health.

The plant's waste water will contain chlorine and will be discharged at a temperature of 32-35°. Salinity will decrease. Coastal ecosystems are very sensitive to change, so the oyster and prawn populations that local people depend on could be severely reduced.

The power plant will draw the massive amounts of water it needs from underground. Local people have already seen the level of their wells drop with the expansion of industries.

There is a group, Kilusan Laban Sa Power Plant (KLPP), campaigning against the location of the power plant literally on the doorstep of Tanza. KLPP is appealing for support for its campaign.
