Thousands in student fares protest
By Rebecca Meckelburg
ADELAIDE — About 3000 students rallied on the steps of parliament house on September 11 to oppose the state government's budget decision to charge students full fares for travel on public transport.
The only students who will be exempt are those eligible for Austudy. This will affect the majority of students: an Adelaide University Union survey earlier this year showed that only 23% of students at that campus were eligible for Austudy.
Speakers pointed out that the move, aimed at saving $2 million this financial year, comes at the same time as the government is bailing out the State Bank to the tune of $2.3 billion.

By now we all know that the rich get richer under capitalism. But many are astounded at the incredible pace this takes place.
"Without Green Left Weekly, freedom of press and public truth-telling in Australia would be gravely ill."
