Youth speak out

ADELAIDE — The radical youth organisation Resistance held a successful youth speak-out in Rundle Mall here on Saturday, November 27.

Armed with placards and leaflets displaying slogans like: "Resistance says free education for all" and "Don't agonise, organise!", young activists amplified their comments on the state of society while Bob Marley's "Get up, stand up" played in the background.

People spoke about the lack of decent public transport, high levels of unemployment faced by young people and a general lack of faith in the two main political parties.

They said that both the Labor and the Liberal parties have failed young people, especially with respect to the youth training wage and regressive cuts to secondary and tertiary education.

Resistance activist Anthony Thirlwall told Green Left Weekly, "Young people are fed up with mainstream politics. Now more than ever there is a need for political alternatives which address the real problems, including those concerning young people."
