ISRAEL: Government aids illegal settlers

March 16, 2005
Issue

A report commissioned by the Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, released on March 9, has found that at least 105 illegal "outposts" of Israelis in Palestinian areas are established, maintained and expanded with the support of the government. Under the US-backed "roadmap to peace", Israel has agreed to dismantle outposts (a term Israel uses to describe settlements not officially approved by the government) set up since 2001. While it is an open secret that the government supports the outposts, which play a key role in justifying the theft of Palestinian land, the admission in a government document is embarrassing.
