ExxonMobil promotes confusion on global warming
In a report published on January 3, the Union of Concerned Scientists argues that ExxonMobil is employing disinformation tactics used by the tobacco industry to promote public confusion over climate change and to delay urgent action to halt global warming. According to the report, titled "Smoke, Mirrors & Hot Air: How ExxonMobil Uses Big Tobacco's Tactics to Manufacture Uncertainty on Climate Change", Exxonmobil directed almost $16 million between 1998 and 2005 "to a network of 43 advocacy organizations that seek to confuse the public on global warming science", just as the tobacco industry rejected evidence that smoking caused lung cancer.
