Sustainability conference planned

BRISBANE — A conference on ecological sustainability, featuring well-known environmental speakers such as Ted Trainer and Bob Brown, will be held at Griffith University in July. The conference is being organised by the university Sustainable Society Club, a group committed to encouraging student research, discussion and action around ecological sustainability.

The July 15-18 conference follows last year's extremely successful inaugural "Students, Science and Sustainability" conference. The SSC intends to establish a national student network interested in keeping up to date with sustainability issues.

The SSC hopes to encourage students to reorient their studies, and pressure for changes to curricula, to address the requirements of sustainability in their fields of study before they begin their professional lives.

Other keynote speakers include Professor Ian Lowe, state environment minister Pat Comben and Brisbane mayor Jim Soorley. Panel sessions will focus on ecologically sustainable development, sustainability in cities, strategies for personal and societal change and a report from the UNCED conference. Workshops will reinforce and discuss issues raised by the speakers.
