MALAYSIA: Workers protest at German embassy

Workers demonstrated outside the German embassy in Kuala Lampur on December 1, calling on the German ambassador to Malaysia to intervene in an industrial dispute at a German-owned factory. The workers also staged a noisy but peaceful protest outside Wisma Tan & Tan, the site of several foreign embassies, including Germany's. A letter outlining allegations against the 59% German-owned packaging company Nordenia-Thong Fook was delivered to the embassy. One of the workers' complains is an alleged attempt by the company to prevent the Sungai Siput hospital from issuing medical leave to the factory's employees. The workers also highlighted the company's union-busting methods, intimidation and harassment of workers and attempts to foster racial tensions between workers of Malay and Indian background in an effort to undermine the union.
