UNITED STATES: Campaign to stop execution of peacemaker
On November 30, actions and meetings took place across the US calling on California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to grant clemency to Stan Tookie Williams, including a 1000-strong protest outside San Quentin Prison. Williams is scheduled to be executed on December 13 for four 1979 murders that he continues to maintain he did not commit, and for which he was convicted under a racist justice system. Since being imprisoned, the former gang leader has rehabilitated himself. Williams has written books for children warning against crime and prison and has helped promote peace agreements between rival street gangs. Since October when the Supreme Court rejected Williams' latest appeal, support has flooded in from movie stars, musicians, anti-racist activists and others calling for Schwarzenegger to grant clemency. By now we all know that the rich get richer under capitalism. But many are astounded at the incredible pace this takes place.
"Without Green Left Weekly, freedom of press and public truth-telling in Australia would be gravely ill."
