Rochedale dump 'legal'

BRISBANE — "We will never give up trying to stop the dump. We won't give up until we've at least we've got a wider buffer zone", Glenys Head, spokesperson for Rochedale residents fighting a proposed dump, said on June 19.

She said that Rochedale residents were bitterly disappointed by a Supreme Court decision announced that day that construction of the controversial waste dump in their southern Brisbane suburb was lawful on its current extractive industry zoning.

The ruling is a further blow to the long-running campaign by residents to halt the toxic danger represented by the dump, following the refusal of Labor Lord Mayor Jim Soorley to stop the dump, breaking a clear election promise.

The residents' solicitor said, "It's been a long hard fight — a terribly costly court fight for a band of ordinary people from the suburb of Rochedale up against the largest local authority in Australia and one of the world's very large multinational corporations".

The group intends to continue monitoring the dump site as a basis for the next stage of the campaign.
