EL SALVADOR: Repression continues
The Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador reported on August 2 that violence and intimidation against progressive forces has continued since the July 2 political murders of Juana and Francisco Manzanares and the brutal police attacks on a July 5 student protest. In late July, the water workers' union (SETA) received a death threat against it and two other unions, signed by a group calling itself "Viva mi Major". This name is a reference to the infamous founder of the Salvadoran death squads and of the ruling Arena party, Major Roberto D'Aubuisson. SETA has been part of organising a national coalition uniting water workers, community groups and environmentalists against government plans for water privatisation. By now we all know that the rich get richer under capitalism. But many are astounded at the incredible pace this takes place.
"Without Green Left Weekly, freedom of press and public truth-telling in Australia would be gravely ill."
