BRITAIN: Radiation reached Britain from Iraq
The February 19 British Sunday Times featured a new Green Audit report indicating that depleted uranium from the 2003 bombing of Iraq spread across Europe and reached Britain within nine days. Radiation detectors in Britain recorded a quadrupling of radiation levels after the March 2003 bombing campaign. One reading in Reading was so high that the Environment Agency was alerted. Government officials claimed the increases were "coincidental" and that they were caused by local factors rather than the Iraq bombing. According to Green Audit's Chris Busby, from Liverpool University's department of human anatomy and cell biology, the research shows that "rather than remaining near the target as claimed by the military, depleted uranium weapons contaminate both locals and whole populations hundreds to thousands of miles away".
