Protests condemn Australian logging
On March 6, environmental protesters demonstrated at Australian embassies and consulates in the US, Canada, Japan and Britain against the destruction of old-growth forests in Tasmania and the undermining of democracy by Forestry Tasmania and logging giant Gunns Ltd. A letter addressed to PM John Howard, calling on his government to protect Tasmania's forests, was signed by a range of international conservation groups. Protesters carrying signs saying "Stop Gunns" and "Save Tassie's Trees", had "Gunns" taped over their mouths in solidarity with the 20 people being sued by Gunns for speaking out against its attacks on the environment and public health. By now we all know that the rich get richer under capitalism. But many are astounded at the incredible pace this takes place.
"Without Green Left Weekly, freedom of press and public truth-telling in Australia would be gravely ill."
