NORTHERN IRELAND: Concern over Taser trial

The Human Rights Commission of Northern Ireland has expressed concern over a trial of Taser guns. On March 23 the Policing Board of Northern Ireland invited a two-week "consultation", stating it is "proposed that the use of Tasers be introduced on a limited, pilot basis as a less-lethal alternative to the use of fire-arms in one-to-one situations". However, the Human Rights Commissioner for Northern Ireland, professor Monica McWilliams, argued on march 28 that "not enough consideration has been given to the potential impact of the use of Tasers on individuals who may have mental health problems or children and young people". Despite negative feedback during the consultation process, the policing board is expected to introduce Tasers onto the streets of Northern Ireland soon.
