BURMA: Pro-democracy protests mark Suu Kyi's birthday
Protests calling for an end to Burma's military dictatorship were held in more than 25 countries around the world on June 19, marking the 61st birthday of Aung San Suu Kyi. Suu Kyi, the leader of Burma's National League For Democracy, is under house arrest. Her period of detention was due to expire in May, but was extended for another year by the Burmese regime. Associated Press reported that in Rangoon a lone protester "shouted 'Long live Daw Aung San Suu Kyi' for several minutes in a rare public protest before police bundled him away, witnesses said".
