ITALY: 500,000 protest war, support journalist
On February 19, 500,000 people flooded Rome calling for an end to the war and occupation, and for the freeing of kidnapped Il Manifesto journalist and feminist activist Giuliana Sgrena. During Sgrena's one-month imprisonment, Italian television repeatedly played a clip of her calling for an end to the occupation. An Italian secret service agent, Nicola Calipari, successfully negotiated Sgrena's release on March 3. Tragically, US troops fired on the car carrying them to safety, Calipari was killed as he threw himself over Sgrena, who was wounded.
