UNITED STATES: Caterpillars under pressure
A motion put to the annual shareholders meeting of Caterpillar industries to "re-evaluate selling bulldozers to the Israeli army" was defeated, garnering 3% of the vote (representing US$600 million share holdings), on April 13. Caterpillar bulldozers are used in Israel to destroy civilian homes. Two years ago, one ran over US peace activist Rachel Corrie, killing her. Two days after the meeting, Corrie's parents filed suit against Caterpillar industries for aiding and abetting war crimes. They are also encouraging governments and councils to boycott the company, and institutions to divest of Caterpillar shares. By now we all know that the rich get richer under capitalism. But many are astounded at the incredible pace this takes place.
"Without Green Left Weekly, freedom of press and public truth-telling in Australia would be gravely ill."
