UTS introduces full fees

SYDNEY — On June 20, the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) council voted 13-to-three in favour of introducing full-fee-paying places for up to 35% of domestic undergraduate places next year.

Michelle Sparks, president of the UTS Students Association, said, "We are shocked that UTS made this decision. It is an irresponsible decision, made without sufficient information or consultation."

According to Vice-Chancellor Ross Milbourne, the introduction of full-fee-paying places is necessary due to inadequate funding from the federal government. The council discussed implementing fees of at least $15,000 per year, which would mean some degrees could cost up to $100,000.

Students Association education officer Angela Khodeir said the decision "means UTS no longer supports the existence of public education, but an education system where only those who can pay can go".
