Solidarity brigade farewelled
MELBOURNE — Sixty people gathered at Comrades Bar on July 1 to farewell participants in a soldiarity brigade to Venezuela. The even was jointly organised by Green Left Weekly, the Electrical Trades Union (ETU) and the Australia-Venezuela Solidarity Network.
An electrical apprentice who will be one of the 57 people going on the brigade addressed the event, along with
Allen Jennings from the Committees in Solidarity with Latin America and the Carribean. Jennings told the crowd that this will be the second largest solidarity brigade ever to leave Australia. The largest went to Spain in the 1930s to help the fight against fascism.
In a live cross from Caracas, Green Left Weekly correspondent Roberto Jorquera gave people a feel for daily life in Venezuela. Live music was provided by local activist band Granma.

"Without Green Left Weekly, freedom of press and public truth-telling in Australia would be gravely ill."
