PAPUA NEW GUINEA: Students assaulted by police
Students were brutally attacked and tear-gassed by police at the University of Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby on July 27, following a series of clashes over a new grading system at the university. A number of students sustained serious injuries including fractured bones. Student Jamie Kora told ABC Radio National on July 27 that he was kicked and beaten in full view of police commanders. "People that are supposed to protect the democratic rights of the students are the ones who came and bashed us up, so we don't know who will protect us anymore", he said.
