Howard hanged
SYDNEY — On October 9, students at University of Western Sydney-Bankstown "hanged" Prime Minister John Howard!
Students found Howard guilty of attacking trade unions, the inhumane treatment of refugees, attacking and underfunding public education and health care, lying to the Australian people about the reasons for war on Iraq and colluding with war criminal George Bush.
The action's goal was to gain student support and create awareness about the planned restructuring of the UWS Students Association during the Christmas break.
A mass rally will be held outside the UWS board of trustees meeting on October 22. For further details, phone Megan Connor on 0419 117 606.
FMLN leader visits
NEWCASTLE — Nidia Diaz, former guerrilla commander and long-time leader of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) of El Salvador, addressed a public meeting organised by the Committee in Solidarity with Latin America and the Caribbean here on October 7.
Diaz, who is also a member of parliament, explained that the FMLN has a good chance of winning El Salvador's election in March. An FMLN president would establish diplomatic relations with Cuba and work closely with Venezuela and Brazil. Election observers are needed, she said.
State MP Bryce Gaudry, Greens councillor Ian McKenzie and representatives of the Salvadorean community also attended.

By now we all know that the rich get richer under capitalism. But many are astounded at the incredible pace this takes place.
"Without Green Left Weekly, freedom of press and public truth-telling in Australia would be gravely ill."
